What is surface grinding?
Surface grinding is a widely used abrasive machining process in which a rotating wheel (grinding wheel) covered with rough particles cuts chips of metallic or non-metallic material from a workpiece to produce a smooth finish on a flat surface. Surface grinding is the most common grinding operation. It is a finishing process that uses a rotating grinding wheel to smooth the flat surface of a metallic or non-metallic material to give it a more refined appearance or to obtain a surface required for a functional purpose. Typical workpiece materials include cast iron and mild steel. Other materials are aluminum, stainless steel, brass, some plastics, ceramics and composites.

Grinding Tolerances – Thickness, Parallelism, Flatness
Our largest surface grinders can achieve thickness and parallelism tolerances of +/- .001″. When machining larger steel parts, achieving flatness is much more difficult. Flatness capabilities approach 0.0015 per foot. Smaller and Heavier parts allow for greater flatness accuracy.
Our largest surface grinders measure up to 31″ x 37″ x 200″ and can maintain parallelism tolerances as close as 0.001. These surface grinders regularly grind and recondition machine parts for heavy steel service centers. Examples include regrinding welder molds and Recondition shears. Consider 16 to 32 to 48 RMS finish standards.
