Grinding Tolerances and Dimensions
Elimold’s surface grinding services meet the highest precision tolerances and demanding surface finish requirements for a wide variety of custom precision parts. Our large, well-maintained facility allows us to perform OD/ID grinding on parts up to 20″ in diameter and 10′ in length, as well as surface grinding on parts up to 30″ in length and 14″ in width. We also offer rotary surface grinding services for bulk stock removal on parts up to 42″ in length.
In addition, we are able to grind parts of a wide range of sizes, shapes, and geometric complexities. Our cylindrical grinding equipment has a working envelope of 13.0″ in diameter and 69.0″ between centers to handle straight, tapered, or contoured external surfaces. We can perform ID grinding on bores as narrow as 0.25″ in diameter or as wide as 10.0″. Our surface grinders provide very fine finishes, precise dimensions, and excellent flatness, and we also offer polishing services to remove oxides and create defect-free surfaces. Our staff is well versed in all the basics of precision grinding and is able to select the best abrasive and grit size for each grinding task. All of our grinding processes produce superior results with dimensional tolerances as close as ±0.0001″.
Quality Assurance Inspection
Other shops can machine parts, but Elimold can machine them to tight tolerances every time. Our grinding department handles a wide range of metal parts. We also grind a wide range of polymer materials. We are ISO 9001 certified and our quality assurance includes profilometer, coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection and a range of other measurement analysis based on your specifications. So, once the part is completed, it goes to our quality assurance department, which has several advanced computer-controlled measuring machines. Elimold has a full-time quality inspection team. All tools, equipment and parts are calibrated, documented and archived according to ISO standards.

What is surface grinding?
In the precision grinding process, a rotating grinding wheel is used to smooth the surface of a workpiece, which is usually flat. This process is well suited to parts made of ceramic, metal or plastic, as each pass of the grinding wheel removes a very thin layer of material, resulting in an extremely smooth and flat surface. The grinding machine consists of an electric spindle that holds the grinding wheel. Below the spindle is a workpiece holding device, usually an electromagnetic chuck. The chuck holds the workpiece in a stationary position while it is machined. The grinding wheel then moves over the surface of the workpiece while gradually approaching the workpiece with each pass. This precise control of the amount of material removed with each pass allows tight tolerances to be achieved. To create high-precision shapes on the workpiece, the grinding wheel can be easily shaped in a process called wheel dressing.
