Aluminum Materials Used in Custom Aluminum Parts
Aluminum is a very common and popular metal because it is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and stable at extremely low temperatures where other metals are brittle. Aluminum is refined from bauxite, and pure aluminum is soft and easy to work. To improve the mechanical properties of the material, aluminum almost always needs to be alloyed. When combined with metals such as copper, iron, zinc, silicon, or magnesium, aluminum becomes very strong and durable. Like copper, aluminum is a good conductor of electricity and is non-toxic and non-magnetic. Elimold offers a variety of different grades of aluminum alloys, each with different properties, strengths, and applications.
Commonly Used Aluminum Material Grades For Custom Aluminum Products
Series 1 (1050, 1070, 1080, 1085, 1100)
These aluminum alloys have a purity of 99.00% or higher. They offer good formability and surface finish, and high corrosion resistance. However, their strength is relatively low; the higher the purity, the lower the strength.
Series 2 (2024, 2A16, 2A02)
These aluminum alloys have high hardness but poor corrosion resistance, and the highest copper content (3% to 5%). The 2000 series includes 2024, 2A16, and 2A02. They are widely used in aerospace and construction, such as in bar manufacturing.
Series 3 (3003, 3105, 3A21)
These aluminum alloys are primarily composed of manganese (1.0% to 1.5%) and have good corrosion resistance. The 3000 series includes 3003, 3105, and 3A21. These aluminum alloys exhibit good formability, solubility, and corrosion resistance.
Four-Series Aluminum Alloys (4A01)
These aluminum alloys have a silicon content of 4.5% to 6.0%, resulting in higher strength. 4000 series aluminum rods, represented by 4A01, possess good melt flowability, low solidification shrinkage, low melting point, good corrosion resistance, and heat and wear resistance.
Five-Series (5052, 5005, 5083, 5A05)
These aluminum alloys are used in aluminum alloy sheet series, with magnesium as the main element (3%–5%). The 5000 series aluminum alloys include 5052, 5005, 5083, and 5A05. They are known as low-density, high tensile strength, and high elongation aluminum-magnesium alloys. This aluminum material has moderate strength, good corrosion resistance, solubility, and formability, as well as high fatigue strength and good seawater corrosion resistance.
6000 Series (6061, 6063)
These aluminum alloys belong to the 6000 series, primarily composed of magnesium and silicon, combining the advantages of both the 4000 and 5000 series. They are easy to machine, easy to coat, and have good machinability. The 6000 series aluminum alloys include 6061 and 6063, with 6061 having higher strength than 6063.
7000 Series (7075)
The 7000 series aluminum alloys are represented by 7075, which also belongs to the aerospace series and is an aluminum-magnesium-zinc-copper alloy.

Finishing Aluminum Parts
One of the great things about aluminum is that it looks good on its own but can be enhanced using a variety of finishes, depending on how you manufacture your parts.
Anodizing
Types I, II, and III improve part durability and can add color
Bead Blasting
Light bead blast to provide uniform finish and light texture
Black Oxide
Improves corrosion resistance
Brushing
Achieves uniform, stain-like surface finish
Brushing + Electropolishing
Results in easy-to-clean parts that are corrosion resistant
Clear Chromate
Improves corrosion resistance, adds electrical conductivity, and the ability to paint parts
Electroless Nickel Plating
A wear-, abrasion-, and corrosion-resistance finish
Custom or Standard
Finishing options for 3D-printed aluminum parts
Inserts
Used to incorporate off-the-shelf hardware components to facilitate assembly
Masking
Using tape, rounds, and plugs, we can avoid applying finishes to specific locations on your parts
Part Marking
Add numbers to each part to easily identify and trace them.
Passivation
Chemical process that enhances durability and corrosion resistance on metal surfaces
Polishing
Creates mirror-like finishes
Powder Coating
Dry pigment in a wide variety of colors is blown onto metal and bonds electrostatically, the parts then get oven dried creating a thick and protective coating
Silk Screening
Ink is forced through a stencil and fine mesh screen onto the metal surface
Standard Finishing(CNC Machining)
Three standard surface finish options are available for machined aluminum (edges broken, edges broken and light bead blast, or leave sharp)
Standard Finishing
(Sheet Metal Fabrication) Choose from orbital sander or straight grain/brushed
Tin
Provides a barrier against corrosion and offers excellent weldability and electrical conductivity
Wet Paint
Provides a colorful coating in virtually any color
Yellow Chromate
A thin, iridescent yellowish film providing outstanding corrosion resistance
Zinc
A protective coating that reduces chances of corrosion, even if scratched
Samples and Production Lead Time
Depending on the complexity of the parts, sample delivery time is typically 10 to 12 days. Standard production batches are generally completed within 20 to 25 days, depending on quantity and processing requirements. Under normal production scheduling, repeat batch orders are usually processed within 15 to 20 days. Delivery dates will be confirmed during the quotation review phase following technical evaluation.
Dimensional Tolerances
We strictly adhere to quality control processes to ensure all parts conform to specified dimensions. Standard machining tolerances comply with ISO 2768-mK standards, and tighter tolerances are available upon request. Elimold’s aluminum parts, machined aluminum parts, and CNC-machined parts have very tight manufacturing tolerances, typically between ±0.005 mm and ±0.02 mm, with the specific tolerance range depending on the complexity of the part and its application. These tolerances ensure precise assembly and optimal function of the parts. We use advanced measuring tools such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to verify these tolerances.
Quality Control & Testing
Quality is built into every step of our manufacturing process. We utilize state-of-the-art metrology equipment to validate dimensional accuracy and ensure consistent material properties across production runs.
- CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) verification
- First article inspection reports
- Statistical process control (SPC)
- Material certification
- Hardness testing
- Surface finish measurement
OEM Mass Production Capability
We customize aluminum parts according to customer drawings and production requirements. Batch size depends on the part’s geometry, weight, machining time, and assembly application. Small, lightweight parts may require larger quantities, while larger, heavier parts are typically produced in medium to high batches. Each project is evaluated based on machining complexity and production schedule. However, we are not a single-piece prototype workshop producing only 5 to 10 finished products. Samples can be provided before mass production if needed. Once the samples are approved, mass production can begin. The confirmed production quantity must take into account machining time, setup complexity, and part dimensions. Batch size depends on technical feasibility and production efficiency.
Packaging and Shipping Preparation
Packaging methods depend on the geometry and surface finish requirements of the parts. Parts are protected during transport to prevent edge damage and surface scratches. Bulk orders are packed in controlled quantities into each carton to ensure parts safety and accurate quantity. If surface treatments are applied, packaging methods are adjusted to prevent coating damage during transport. The choice of shipping method depends on order size, urgency, and agreed delivery terms.
