Our Capabilities

3 Axis CNC Machining size capabilities are 40 inches long, 22 inches wide, and 18 inches high. Our fleet of over 50 milling and turning centers enables us to manufacture parts of all types, sizes and quantities. Typical machining tolerances are approximately (+0.01mm), and in precision applications, tight machining tolerances are usually (+0.0005mm). Specific tolerances can be discussed with the customer, taking into account the material, size and geometry of the part. Additional services such as anodizing, polishing, heat treating and engraving are available, with complex assemblies completed on site.

What is 3 Axis Machining?

3-Axis Machining is a metal milling process that involves cutting parts on three different axes: X, Y, and Z. At Elimold, we utilize 3-Axis Machining in a variety of different ways, including but not limited to: cutting precise edges, drilling holes into material, and milling out surfaces, contours, and slots into a material. Our machines allow us to cut to very tight tolerances with pinpoint accuracy.
A milling machine works by shaving and cutting away parts of raw material that is not needed. Multi-access milling and machining align the tool with the material, then works it down to the desired size and shape. The typical configuration moves the device while keeping your part stationary.

What is the Difference Between 3-Axis, 4-Axis and 5-Axis CNC Milling?

In CNC machining, the axis refers to the number of motors operating individually to position the tool.

A basic vertical milling center has 3 axes (X, Y, and Z) and is used to machine planes or convex shapes. 3-axis milling is used for hole drilling, slot milling, and making sharp edges.

A 4th axis adds rotary movement in order to machine features on an arc or curved surface (for example machining a gear). 4-axis machining can be used for a wide range of applications including turbine components, valves, sockets, construction equipment and much more.

4-axis machining is more efficient and precise than performing the same operation manually using conventional 3-axis milling equipment.

5-axis machining includes an additional rotational axis to that of a 4-axis machine. The 5th axis in 5-axis milling machine is around the B-axis, which rotates around the Y-axis in the X-Y-Z plane. This multidimensional rotation and tool movement allows for B-axis precision, finish and speed at the highest level in the production of a piece.

5-axis machining is the most accurate and efficient machining process, allowing us to can create very complex parts with quicker run times. 5-axis machining is important for high-level uses, such as aerospace and power generation applications.

Advantages of 3-axis CNC machining

The benefits of 3-axis CNC machining start with the ability to create more shapes with more complex angles and orientations. This provides a more accurate computer representation of the design and spec set, and also creates a final product that is closer to detailed specs than if made from just 2 axes. This is often a problem with 2-axis only machining, as the system ends up having to make multiple cuts and changes to affect the same shape that would be possible with a single motion in a 3-axis system.
The complexity that a three-axis approach can bring also becomes apparent in terms of manufacturing versatility. Compared to simply producing basic parts that require further manual processing, 3-axis CNC machining enables the direct production of designs in an automated manner. This eliminates multiple steps and room for manual errors. This difference is immediately apparent in the production of jigs, fixtures and similar products.
