What is 3-axis machining?
3-axis machining refers to machines where the spindle is able to move back and forth in the X, Y, and Z axes. The workpiece is fixed in one position during the machining process. For certain parts, 3-axis machining is an excellent way to use it. For parts that are not too detailed or deep, 3-axis machining works well. It is most commonly used to make machine parts and is best suited for automated/interactive performance, milling slots, drilling holes, cutting sharp borders. At Elimold, we utilize 3-axis machining in a variety of different ways, including but not limited to: cutting precise edges, drilling holes in materials, and milling surfaces, contours, and slots in materials. Our machines allow us to cut to very tight tolerances with extreme precision.
Advantages of 3-axis CNC machining
The advantages of 3-axis CNC machining begin with the ability to create more shapes with more complex angles and orientations. This provides a more accurate computer representation of the design and specification set, and it also creates a final product that is closer to detailed specifications than using only 2 axes. This is often a problem with 2-axis machining, as the system ends up having to make multiple cuts and changes to affect the same shape, which can be achieved with a single movement in a 3-axis system. The complexity brought by the 3-axis approach is also evident in manufacturing versatility. 3-axis CNC machining is able to directly produce the design in an automated manner, compared to producing only basic parts that require further manual processing. This eliminates multiple steps and avoids manual errors. This difference is immediately apparent in the production of jigs, fixtures and similar products.

What is the difference between 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC machining?
In CNC machining, axes refer to the number of motors that operate independently to position the tool. Basic vertical milling centers have 3 axes (X, Y, and Z) for machining flat or convex shapes. 3-axis machining is used for drilling holes, milling slots, and creating sharp edges.
The 4th axis adds rotational motion to allow for machining features on arcs or curved surfaces (such as machining gears). 4-axis machining can be used for a wide range of applications, including turbine components, valves, sockets, construction equipment, and more. 4-axis machining is more efficient and accurate than performing the same operation manually using traditional 3-axis milling equipment.
5-axis machining adds a rotational axis to a 4-axis machine. The 5th axis of a 5-axis machine revolves around the B-axis, which rotates around the Y-axis in the XYZ plane. This multi-dimensional rotation and tool motion allows the B-axis to produce workpieces with the highest levels of accuracy, finish, and speed. 5-axis machining is the most precise and efficient machining process, allowing us to manufacture very complex parts with faster run times. 5-axis machining is important for advanced uses, such as aerospace and power generation applications.
