The Superior Physical Properties of Titanium Alloys

Titanium is a new type of metal. Its properties are closely related to the content of impurities such as carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. The purest titanium iodide has an impurity content of no more than 0.1%, but it has lower strength and higher plasticity. The performance parameters of 99.5% industrial pure titanium are as follows: density ρ = 4.5 g/cm³, melting point 1725℃, thermal conductivity λ = 15.24 W/(mK), tensile strength σb = 539 MPa, elongation δ = 25%, reduction of area ψ = 25%, elastic modulus E = 1.078 × 10⁵ MPa, and hardness HB195. It can operate for extended periods at temperatures ranging from 450 to 500℃. It is particularly resistant to pitting corrosion, acid corrosion, and stress corrosion; it also exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to alkalis, chlorides, chlorine, organic matter, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. However, titanium has poor corrosion resistance in media containing reducing oxygen and chromium salts. Titanium is renowned for its superior physical properties, making it an ideal material for various industries. Its low density, about 60% that of steel, facilitates lightweight design without compromising strength. Overall, titanium’s unique advantages, including light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility, make it a preferred material for innovative solutions across multiple industries.

Available Materials

The softest and most ductile of the commercially pure (CP) Ti grades. It has excellent formability and high impact toughness.

Slightly stronger than Grade 1, with good formability and weldability. It is the most widely used CP Ti grade.

Higher strength than Grades 1 and 2, with moderate formability and good weldability.

The strongest of the CP Ti grades, with good formability and excellent corrosion resistance.

An alloy containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is a popular Ti alloy with an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and low weight.

A CP Ti grade with a small amount of palladium added for enhanced corrosion resistance, especially in acidic environments.

An alloy with 3% aluminum and 2.5% vanadium. It offers good weldability, formability, and medium strength.

A variant of Grade 5 with extra-low interstitial (ELI) content, provides higher fracture toughness and better fatigue resistance.
