Is HIPS Plastic Right for Your Project?
When considering using HIPS plastic for your project, it’s crucial to assess your specific needs. If your product requires a balance of cost-effectiveness and ease of manufacturing, then HIPS may be an excellent choice. However, as mentioned earlier, for applications requiring high chemical resistance or exposure to high temperatures, it’s important to evaluate whether alternative materials such as ABS or polypropylene are more suitable. If you require professional HIPS injection molding services, please contact the Elimold team for a project quote.
What is High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)?
High impact polystyrene (HIPS) is a rubber-reinforced polystyrene plastic. Its structure consists of long-chain polystyrene with fine rubber polymer particles distributed within. These particles act like “shock absorbers,” preventing cracks from propagating within the polymer. Compared to pure polystyrene, its impact strength is significantly improved while retaining the main properties of polystyrene, such as ductility and a reasonable price. It has been widely used in consumer electronics. HIPS consists of two phases: a continuous polystyrene phase and a rubber-dispersed phase. HIPS is typically synthesized using bulk radical polymerization.
Properties of High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
High impact polystyrene (HIPS) possesses a variety of excellent properties, making it a versatile and high-performance material. It is characterized by high rigidity, impact resistance, lightweight, ease of processing, and a low melting point. Furthermore, HIPS is resistant to chemical corrosion, oils, and greases. According to ASTM standards, HIPS has a tensile strength of 24.8 MPa (3,600 psi) and a tensile modulus of 1.8 GPa (261 ksi). This plastic can withstand sufficient tensile forces, making it an ideal choice for numerous industries and products.

What is High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) Injection Molding?
HIPS injection molding works by melting high impact polystyrene into a liquid and then injecting it into a double-sided mold under extremely high pressure. After cooling and solidification, the product can be painted, labeled, or coated as needed. While injection molding molds are expensive, we are committed to providing cost-effective mold designs that, once completed, can be used for future orders. This means that for large-volume orders, the unit cost is very low. Furthermore, HIPS injection molding is ideal for small plastic parts and products, especially for high-volume production of parts requiring high-precision details or variable thickness.
HIPS Plastics Compared to Other Plastics
When considering the performance of HIPS compared to other plastics, understanding the facts is crucial. Here is the information we have:
HIPS vs. ABS
Both HIPS and ABS are known for their strength and durability, but ABS performs better in terms of high-temperature resistance and chemical resistance. However, HIPS is generally more cost-effective, making it the better choice for projects where cost is a primary consideration.
High-Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) vs. Polypropylene
While polypropylene is more flexible and heat-resistant, high-impact polystyrene is easier to print. The choice between the two depends on the specific requirements of the project.
High-Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) vs. Plain Polystyrene
Plain polystyrene is brittle and easily broken, while high-impact polystyrene offers better impact resistance. High-impact polystyrene is ideal when higher durability is required.
