What is Beryllium Copper?
Beryllium copper is an alloy of copper and 0.5% to 3% beryllium. It is non-magnetic, spark-free, and possesses high ductility, wear resistance, and resistance to non-oxidizing acids. This high-performance alloy is renowned for its exceptional strength, excellent electrical conductivity, and outstanding corrosion resistance, especially when conforming to international standards such as UNS and ASTM. This versatile material has wide applications across various industries. Its already high strength can be enhanced through heat treatment, and it retains its shape well after molding, making it ideal for various electronic applications. Product testing reports and catalogs display the EU RoHS compliance mark, but compliance assessments are based on our internal standards.
What are the differences between beryllium copper and copper?
While beryllium copper and copper may share some similarities in name and properties, they differ in other important aspects and are not interchangeable. Some of the differences are as follows:
- Electrical and Thermal Conductivity: Copper has a conductivity of 100%, while beryllium copper has a conductivity of 15-30%. The combination of beryllium copper’s low conductivity with its other excellent properties is quite rare.
- Hardness and Formability: Copper is a relatively soft metal, while beryllium copper is known for its superior quality and strength. It can be machined into springs and various complex shapes and is currently the strongest copper-based alloy.
- Applications: Copper is often used in aesthetically pleasing items, such as for decorative purposes. However, beryllium copper, due to its superior physical properties (strength and hardness), is more suitable for internal components.
Copper-Beryllium Alloy Grades
Elimold specializes in producing CNC parts made from copper-beryllium alloys. These alloys are divided into two main categories:
C182/C18200
Copper alloys containing 0.5%–3% beryllium. They possess high strength (up to 1400 MPa), good thermal conductivity (62 Btu/h-ft-°F or 107 W/mK), and a solid melting point of 1590 °F (866 °C). They exhibit good ductility, weldability, and machinability, and are resistant to non-oxidizing acids, abrasion, and adhesive wear. Furthermore, their excellent ductility, weldability, and machinability make them widely used in metalworking.
C187/C18700
C18700 exhibits excellent formability and ductility. It has a tensile strength of 43 ksi, a yield strength of 40 ksi, and an elongation of 18%. At 68°F (20°C), its density is 0.323 lb/cu in, its specific gravity is 8.94, and its electrical conductivity is 96% IACS. At 68°F (20°C), its thermal conductivity is 218 Btu/sq ft/ft hr/°F. Its solid-phase melting point is 1747°F (800°C), and its liquid-phase melting point is 1976°F (900°C). The alloy’s properties can vary depending on its specific composition and heat treatment process.
