What is Hastelloy?
The Hastelloy series comprises a range of nickel-based superalloys, typically composed of multiple elements such as molybdenum, chromium, cobalt, iron, copper, manganese, titanium, zirconium, aluminum, carbon, and tungsten, with nickel as the primary component. Each alloy is carefully designed with specific alloying elements to resist severe corrosion and, in certain conditions, to operate reliably at high temperatures. These alloys exhibit excellent resistance to pitting, stress, oxidation, chemicals, acids, and salt water. Furthermore, Hastelloy maintains good ductility even at prolonged high temperatures. Because of its excellent ductility, it is easy to weld and can be formed through both hot and cold working. Hastelloy typically requires heat treatment and can be annealed.
While all Hastelloy series alloys are renowned for their robustness and durability, their individual strengths make them suitable for diverse and demanding applications, particularly for precision-machined parts where material integrity is critical.

FAQ
The nickel-based forging alloy Hastelloy B-2 exhibits excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, and also demonstrates outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
High-temperature gas passage components, such as turbine combustion chambers, flame stabilizers, linings, pressure vessels in certain nuclear reactors, chemical reactors, and piping or valves in the chemical industry, are made from this alloy.
Hastelloy's excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature resistance make it ideal for chemical reactors, heat exchangers, and marine equipment, especially suitable for environments exposed to acids and seawater.
Our CNC machine tools distinguish themselves by providing customized Hastelloy machining services, ensuring precision, efficiency, and tailored solutions to meet your specific machining needs.
Hastelloy® is a registered trademark of Haynes International, Inc., representing a well-known series of high-performance nickel-based superalloys. It does not refer to a single metal, but rather encompasses several different grades. These alloys are primarily designed to provide superior corrosion resistance in harsh environments, with some grades also exhibiting excellent high-temperature strength. Each Hastelloy grade has a unique composition (typically containing significant amounts of molybdenum and chromium, and sometimes tungsten or iron) designed to deliver optimal performance for specific demanding conditions.
For applications where high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance (rather than water corrosion resistance) are paramount, Hastelloy X is typically the preferred choice in this series. It exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 2200°F (1200°C) and maintains good mechanical strength at these temperatures. Other Hastelloy grades, such as Type C or Type B alloys, are primarily optimized for water corrosion resistance at lower to medium temperatures.
Yes, certain Hastelloy grades are well-suited for marine applications. For example, Hastelloy grades C-276 and C-22 are particularly suitable. They offer excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking—common challenges in marine environments. Their high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content makes them more resistant to seawater corrosion than most stainless steels.
Hastelloy alloys that have undergone proper solution annealing (often supplied and used in this condition for optimal corrosion resistance) are generally non-magnetic (paramagnetic). Some Hastelloy grades may develop slight magnetism after drastic cold working, but this usually does not affect their corrosion resistance or overall performance in their intended application.
Yes, most Hastelloys are weldable. Modern grades, such as C-276 and C-22, are specially designed with lower carbon and silicon content to minimize the precipitation of harmful carbides in the weld heat-affected zone. This allows them to be used directly in the "welded state" for many chemical process applications without significantly reducing their corrosion resistance.
No, Hastelloy is not stainless steel. While both are corrosion-resistant alloys, Hastelloy is a nickel-based high-temperature alloy, while stainless steel is primarily composed of iron with added chromium and other alloying elements. Compared to stainless steel, Hastelloy generally offers superior corrosion resistance and higher temperature resistance.
Yes, due to its high nickel content and complex alloy composition, Hastelloy is significantly more expensive than stainless steel. However, its superior corrosion resistance, longer service life, and lower maintenance requirements in harsh environments usually outweigh the higher initial cost.
