What is Hastelloy?

The Hastelloy series comprises a range of nickel-based superalloys, typically composed of multiple elements such as molybdenum, chromium, cobalt, iron, copper, manganese, titanium, zirconium, aluminum, carbon, and tungsten, with nickel as the primary component. Each alloy is carefully designed with specific alloying elements to resist severe corrosion and, in certain conditions, to operate reliably at high temperatures. These alloys exhibit excellent resistance to pitting, stress, oxidation, chemicals, acids, and salt water. Furthermore, Hastelloy maintains good ductility even at prolonged high temperatures. Because of its excellent ductility, it is easy to weld and can be formed through both hot and cold working. Hastelloy typically requires heat treatment and can be annealed.
While all Hastelloy series alloys are renowned for their robustness and durability, their individual strengths make them suitable for diverse and demanding applications, particularly for precision-machined parts where material integrity is critical.

It does not refer to a single metal, but rather encompasses several different grades. These alloys are primarily designed to provide superior corrosion resistance in harsh environments, with some grades also exhibiting excellent high-temperature strength. Each Hastelloy grade has a unique composition (typically containing significant amounts of molybdenum and chromium, and sometimes tungsten or iron) designed to deliver optimal performance for specific demanding conditions.

For applications where high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance (rather than water corrosion resistance) are paramount, Hastelloy X is typically the preferred choice in this series. It exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 2200°F (1200°C) and maintains good mechanical strength at these temperatures. Other Hastelloy grades, such as Type C or Type B alloys, are primarily optimized for water corrosion resistance at lower to medium temperatures.

Yes, certain Hastelloy grades are well-suited for marine applications. For example, Hastelloy grades C-276 and C-22 are particularly suitable. They offer excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking—common challenges in marine environments.
