What is HDPE?

HDPE, sometimes called PEHD (polyethylene high-density), is part of the polyethylene (PE) family of plastics. It is a high-impact, high-density crystalline thermoplastic. It also has low moisture absorption, good chemical resistance, and corrosion resistance. Compared to its sibling, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), HDPE has higher impact and tensile strength. This polymer has a melting point of 266°F (130°C). Its tensile strength is 20 MPa (2900 psi). High-density polyethylene (HDPE) comes in two grades: 300 and 500. The main difference between these two grades is density. Typically, HDPE density ranges from 0.955 g/cm³ to 0.961 g/cm³. Yield strength ranges from 23 to 29.5 MPa. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic has a crystalline structure with extremely low branching, resulting in superior mechanical properties compared to low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
