Nylon Parts Machining Tolerance Capability
Our extensive experience and expertise enable us to produce a wide range of custom nylon parts with tolerances down to +/- 0.0002 inches. Utilizing CNC machining technology, we can manufacture parts of virtually any shape or form.
Additionally, we can successfully produce nylon parts with a wall thickness of 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) under controlled conditions, but this is the practical limit for most applications. While Elimold can theoretically manufacture even thinner parts, they typically cannot maintain sufficient structural integrity in practical applications. Therefore, for ultra-thin nylon parts with a thickness below 0.01 inches, we employ alternative manufacturing methods such as extrusion or specialized molding processes, which generally provide better results than direct machining.
What is Nylon?
Nylon, also known as polyamide (PA), is named for its combination of strength, toughness, and excellent abrasion resistance. Common CNC-machined nylon grades include PA6, PA66, PA12, cast nylon (PA6C), and glass fiber reinforced nylon, each with slightly different mechanical properties and dimensional characteristics. Nylon possesses high tensile strength, good impact resistance, a low coefficient of friction, and natural lubricity. Furthermore, it exhibits good resistance to oil, fuels, and various industrial solvents, enabling reliable use in harsh mechanical environments. This material has a density of approximately 1.14 g/cm³, ensuring lightweight parts while maintaining structural integrity. Nylon can typically be used in continuous operating temperatures ranging from 80°C to 120°C (specific temperature depends on the grade) and maintains stable performance under dynamic loads and repetitive motion. Pretreatment can also be performed to reduce its hygroscopicity throughout its service life. In addition, nylon’s low hygroscopicity and good dimensional stability ensure stable and reliable performance even in humid or temperature-varying environments.

Surface Finishing Options for Nylon CNC Parts
As Machined
The natural finish that results from the machining process. PA-Nylon has good surface properties and can often be used in this state.
Deburring
This procedure rounds off aggressive edges to facilitate safer handling and enhance assembly fitting.
Sanding
Sanding improves the surface finish of nylon components by making their texture uniform and concealing tool marks.
Polishing
Polishing improves the gloss and smoothness of nylon parts.
Teflon Coating
Nylon’s resistance to wear is improved by applying a Teflon coating. This also decreases friction.
Tumbling
Tumbling applies to parts made of nylon which require smoothing and edge radiusing by gentle rotation in the abrasive media.
Painting
Because of its relatively porous structure, nylon can be painted, although a primer is often needed to increase adhesion.
Powder Coating
The finish on nylon components is made more vibrant and durable through advanced techniques of adhesion that powder coating guarantees.

Our team has extensive experience in CNC machining, ensuring that every custom nylon part is produced to precise specifications and maintains reliable and repeatable accuracy.
Best Practices for CNC Machining of Nylon
When machining nylon, adjust the material to the target humidity, seal the blank, and dry it before finishing. Specify post-machining reprocessing and dimensional limits, and consider changes in moisture absorption and creep over time. Additionally, design for thermal deformation, requiring larger fillet radii, thicker walls, reinforcing ribs, and uniform cross-sections. Limit deep grooves; specify light-cutting, sharp tools and coolants to avoid melting or sticking. If threads are specified, prioritize metal inserts or molded threads; use coarse pitch, larger clearance, and rounded thread ends. Clearly define torque limits and assembly temperatures to prevent stress cracking.
FAQ
Generally, our lead time is approximately 2-3 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project and our current workload. However, we are always committed to meeting our clients' specific needs and delivery deadlines and are happy to work with them to find solutions that fit their timelines.
Yes, our experienced engineers provide comprehensive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) support. We will review your designs to better suit nylon machining, recommend suitable material grades, suggest cost-reduction improvements, and ensure optimal performance. We also provide technical consultation on material selection, tolerance specifications, and surface finish requirements.
We can produce everything from small, precision components to large, complex structures. Commonly used nylon CNC machined parts include gears, bearings, bushings, pulleys, and valve assemblies.
We offer a variety of options to meet your needs. In addition to CNC machining of nylon, we also offer injection molding, extrusion molding, and 3D printing services.
Nylon itself is not waterproof because it is a porous material. However, some types of nylon can have their waterproof properties enhanced through treatments or coatings.
Nylon may degrade under prolonged exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Its UV stability depends on the type of nylon and any additives used in the manufacturing process. Some types of nylon may have UV resistance or their UV resistance can be enhanced through treatments.
Nylon has excellent strength, toughness, and dimensional stability, making it excellent for machining and allowing for finer machining precision. Therefore, its machinability is not significantly different from that of metalworking.
The coefficient of thermal expansion is crucial for the dimensional stability of machined parts. The expansion and contraction of nylon must be controlled when temperatures change to ensure the integrity of the parts. Therefore, it is important for engineers to understand the performance of nylon under different conditions.
Nylon is hygroscopic, absorbing 2% to 8% moisture depending on the grade and humidity. This causes dimensional changes (expansion up to 2%), reducing stiffness but increasing toughness and impact resistance. We can pre-treat parts to balance their moisture content, or recommend using moisture-resistant grades such as PA66 or glass fiber reinforced nylon. For parts requiring high precision, we will compensate during processing.
Yes, we offer FDA-compliant PA6 and PA66 products that are safe for direct food contact. These materials comply with FDA CFR 21.177.1500. Natural (unfilled) grades typically meet FDA standards. We can also provide material traceability documentation for food and pharmaceutical applications upon request.
Nylon offers significant advantages: up to 80% weight reduction, self-lubrication (maintenance-free), 50% noise reduction, corrosion resistance, and typically 60% lower overall cost. While metals excel in extreme temperature (>250°F) or high-load structural applications, nylon generally offers superior lifespan compared to bronze and brass in abrasion-resistant applications, eliminating the need for secondary processing such as electroplating or heat treatment.
Nylon can withstand temperatures up to approximately 180°F (82°C), depending on its grade. However, for higher-temperature applications, reinforced nylon or other materials such as PEEK or polyimide may be necessary. In medium-temperature applications, nylon parts perform well without significant performance degradation.
Yes, nylon plastics can be colored during production using dyes or pigments, such as through injection molding or direct color mixing. However, for CNC machining, it's more common to process pre-colored nylon parts or apply surface coatings, such as painting or anodizing, to achieve the desired color.
Standard nylon material can withstand temperatures from -40°C to 120°C under continuous use. Under short-term impact, it can withstand temperatures up to 150°C. For even higher temperature resistance, I use PA66-GF30, which maintains its strength at high temperatures and does not easily soften under load.
