What is PA (Polyamide, also known as Nylon)?

PA is an abbreviation for polyamide, commonly referred to as nylon. It is a very important thermoplastic widely used in high-performance engineering fields. Its overall properties are well-balanced. Polyamide molecules contain repeating amide bonds, represented by -CO-NH₂. Polyamides can be produced through the polycondensation reaction of copolymers of the same unit and copolymers of different units.
This material has advantages such as being lightweight, having good thermal stability, a low coefficient of friction, and resistance to chemical corrosion, making nylon injection molding a standard choice for mechanical and industrial parts. This material is easy to dye, can be liquefied and recycled after melting, and maintains good safety performance even under high friction and high temperature environments.

Key Advantages of Nylon Injection Molding

  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Nylon offers exceptional strength while maintaining a lightweight profile, making it ideal for durable, high-performance parts.
  • Excellent Abrasion Resistance: Ideal for friction applications such as gears, bearings, and bushings.
  • Chemical Resistance: Nylon is resistant to oils, solvents, and a wide range of chemicals, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments.
  • Customizability: We can modify the material’s properties to meet specific needs, such as adding glass fibers for increased strength or incorporating flame retardants.

Common Nylon Grades and Modifications

We can provide and select the appropriate nylon grade based on your product requirements. Whether you need standard nylon 6, nylon 66, or modified nylon blends, we have the expertise and experience to help you choose the ideal material.

Nylon 6 (PA6) is an aliphatic polyamide made from caprolactam. It possesses good toughness, fatigue resistance, a low coefficient of friction, and good mold flowability, but its relatively high hygroscopicity reduces dimensional stability.

Nylon 66 (PA66) is made from hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. Compared to PA6, it has higher strength, stiffness, abrasion resistance, and heat resistance, as well as better dimensional stability, but lower impact toughness.

Nylon 11 (PA11) is a bio-based long-chain polyamide with low hygroscopicity, high flexibility, excellent chemical resistance, and good low-temperature impact performance.

Nylon 12 (PA12) is a long-chain aliphatic polyamide with extremely low water absorption, good dimensional stability, moderate strength, and excellent chemical resistance.

Polyphthalamide (PPA) is a semi-aromatic nylon with high stiffness, high heat resistance, low hygroscopicity, and excellent chemical stability, commonly used in high-temperature applications.

Nylon 6T, 6I, and 6T/6I copolymers are semi-aromatic polyamides with extremely high melting points, excellent dimensional stability, and low creep, but require relatively high processing temperatures.

Glass fiber reinforced nylon is made by adding glass fibers to nylon, significantly improving stiffness, strength, heat resistance, and creep resistance, but reducing impact strength and surface quality.

Mineral-filled nylon uses mineral fillers to improve dimensional stability, reduce shrinkage, and improve surface smoothness, offering a moderate increase in strength and a good appearance.

Carbon fiber reinforced nylon achieves high stiffness, low weight, and excellent dimensional stability by adding carbon fibers, and in some cases, it also exhibits electrical conductivity.

Impact-modified nylon is made by mixing nylon with elastomer modifiers to improve toughness and impact resistance (especially at low temperatures), but this reduces stiffness and strength.

Lubricated wear-resistant nylon contains internal lubricants such as oil or PTFE, which reduces friction and improves the wear resistance of moving parts.

Flame-retardant nylon contains flame retardants to meet UL flame retardant standards while maintaining good mechanical and thermal properties.

Heat-stabilized nylon contains heat stabilizers to improve its resistance to long-term heat aging, maintaining mechanical strength and color stability.

UV-stabilized nylon contains UV stabilizers to resist degradation caused by sunlight and maintain its mechanical and surface properties outdoors.

Electrically insulating nylon has high dielectric strength and arc resistance, suitable for electrical housings and connectors.

Conductive nylon contains conductive fillers to provide controlled conductivity or electrostatic discharge protection.

Transparent (amorphous) nylon is an amorphous polyamide with optical transparency, good impact strength, and chemical resistance.

High-flow nylon is specially designed to improve melt flow, thus supporting thin-walled and complex injection molding at lower pressures.

FAQ

Nylon molding, typically using injection molding, involves heating plastic granules to a melt. This molten material is then injected into a mold of the desired shape. The nylon cools and hardens within the mold, forming the final product.

Commonly used polyamide (nylon) grades for injection molding include Nylon 6, Nylon 66, and glass fiber reinforced nylons, such as PA6+GF15 and PA6+GF30.

The typical wall thickness range for PA (nylon) injection molded parts is 1.5 mm to 3 mm. Thinner wall thicknesses can be achieved for certain applications to avoid defects such as warpage or incomplete filling.

The shrinkage rate of PA (nylon) injection molded parts is typically 1.0% to 2.0%, depending on the nylon grade and molding conditions. Accurate prediction and control of shrinkage rate are crucial for maintaining tight tolerances and achieving the required part dimensions.

High moisture content can cause hydrolysis in nylon parts during processing, reducing mechanical properties and creating surface defects such as bubbles or voids. Therefore, polyamide (nylon) granules should be thoroughly dried before molding, typically at 80-100°C for 2-4 hours, depending on the material grade and initial moisture content.

Most commonly used nylons can be used continuously in a temperature range of -40°F (-40°C) to 250°F (121°C). However, at higher temperatures, nylon may begin to deform.
