PE Materials

What is polyethylene (PE)?

Polyethylene (PE) is a crystalline raw material polymerized from ethylene monomers (repeating units are –CH₂–CH₂–, usually written as (C₂H₄)ₙ), belonging to the polyolefin family. PE materials have extremely low hygroscopicity, not exceeding 0.01%, and exhibit good flexibility in intermolecular bonding, weak bonding forces, low melt viscosity, and excellent flowability. Furthermore, PE has a wide shrinkage range, large shrinkage values, and a pronounced directionality. Moreover, this material has a molecular weight range of 10,000 to 1,000,000. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has a molecular weight exceeding 100,000. Higher molecular weight generally results in better physical and mechanical properties, more closely meeting the requirements of engineering materials. However, higher molecular weight also increases the difficulty of processing.

Characteristics of Polyethylene (PE) Material

Polyethylene generally possesses advantages such as being lightweight, chemically resistant, and electrically insulating. Its melting point is 100-130°C, exhibiting excellent low-temperature resistance, maintaining good mechanical properties even at -60°C. However, when exposed to the atmosphere, sunlight, and oxygen, polyethylene will age, discolor, crack, become brittle, or powder, losing its mechanical properties.
Moreover, polyethylene has good chemical stability and can withstand corrosion from solutions at room temperature. However, it is not resistant to corrosion from strong oxidizing solutions. Strong oxidizing solvents will slowly corrode polyethylene at room temperature, especially concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, which will rapidly corrode polyethylene at 90-100°C, leading to its destruction or decomposition.

Advantages of PE Injection Molding

Polyethylene has excellent chemical resistance, tolerating a certain degree of corrosion from acids, alkalis, and salts.

PE materials have good flowability during injection molding, allowing for precise filling of complex molds.

PE products, especially HDPE molded products, have good strength and can withstand a certain degree of impact and pressure.

PE has good weather resistance, able to withstand sunlight, rain, and temperature changes without significant performance degradation.

Polyethylene is recyclable. At the end of its product life cycle, polyethylene products can be recycled and remanufactured into new products.

Commonly Used Polyethylene Material Grades

Polyethylene (PE) materials are classified according to their density, molecular structure, and production method. In addition to the grades listed below, we also use various types of industrial-grade polyethylene thermoplastic polymers, such as NSF grade polyethylene, food contact grade polyethylene, and medical-grade polyethylene materials.

LDPE represents low-density polyethylene, with a density of 0.91 to 0.94 g/cm³, and is a primary grade of polyethylene polymer. This material has high ductility, flowability, and chemical resistance, and can withstand alcohols, alkalis, and low-strength oxidizers.

MDPE represents medium-density polyethylene, with a density of 0.926 to 0.960 g/cm³. It has good impact resistance and drop resistance, and compared to high-density polyethylene (HDPE), it has superior crack resistance and excellent sensitivity. Therefore, it is often used in pipe fittings, threaded supports, etc.

LLDPE is a type of polyethylene with a linear molecular structure. Compared to LDPE, it has higher strength and puncture resistance. It is commonly used in films, packaging bags, and linings.

HDPE stands for High-Density Polyethylene. Its density ranges from 0.95 to over 0.97 g/cm³. It has high-temperature resistance exceeding 100°C. Its excellent chemical resistance and high mechanical strength make it an ideal material for injection molding.

UHMWPE stands for Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. Its molecular weight density exceeds 0.95 g/cm³. This material is extremely tough and durable, thus exhibiting excellent abrasion resistance. It also has good processability, making it suitable for molded parts requiring dimensional accuracy.

Modified polyethylene: Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)
Ethylene copolymers: Ethylene-propylene copolymer (plastics), EVA, ethylene-butene copolymer, ethylene-other olefins (such as octene POE, cyclic olefins) copolymer, ethylene-unsaturated ester copolymer (EAA, EMAA, EEA, EMA, EMMA, EMAH).

Polyethylene Injection Molding Design and Engineering Capabilities

Elimold’s design engineering team has extensive experience in optimizing plastic part designs, balancing functionality, aesthetics, cost, and injection molding processes. As with other thermoplastics, maintaining uniform wall thickness in PE parts is crucial for achieving aesthetically pleasing molded components. Poorly designed stiffeners, gussets, and bosses can lead to shrinkage marks. Undercuts, commonly used for snap-fit connections, are prevalent in polyethylene moldings and, if properly sized, allow for easy removal from the mold. Consulting with Elimold’s engineering team ensures that the molded PE parts meet the design engineer’s expectations.

FAQ

The geometry of the part, the number of parts required, your mold budget, and the application of the part will all influence your decision to use PE injection molding to manufacture the part.

Key factors to consider when designing polyethylene (PE) injection molded parts include material selection, wall thickness, and mold design. Choosing the appropriate polyethylene type (low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE)) based on application requirements is crucial for obtaining the desired mechanical properties. Uniform wall thickness is essential to prevent warping and ensure consistent part quality. When designing the mold, a reasonable venting and gate layout is important to avoid air bubbles and ensure smooth material flow. Furthermore, considering the shrinkage rate of polyethylene and incorporating draft angles into the design helps the part demold easily and maintain dimensional accuracy.

PE plastic parts have low surface energy, making painting or bonding challenging, but adhesion can be improved through corona, flame, or plasma treatment.

Regular polyethylene will degrade under prolonged UV exposure, but UV-stabilized polyethylene is available for outdoor use.

PE generally has better impact resistance, especially at low temperatures, but PP has higher stiffness and heat resistance.

Absolutely. Recycled polyethylene can be used for many purposes; you just need to pay attention to its quality and perhaps slightly adjust the formulation for optimal results.

While PE isn't the hardest plastic, it's very tough and impact-resistant, making it ideal for parts that need to bend without breaking.

Depending on the specific application, the lifespan is generally 10 to 50 years.
