What is PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)?

PEEK is a high-strength, semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer favored for its excellent thermal stability, chemical inertness, and mechanical durability. The chemical structure of PEEK consists of three benzene rings linked by ketone and ether groups. This structure, composed of a repeating sequence of benzene rings linked by ketone and ether groups, gives it a robust and stable semi-crystalline structure.
First synthesized in 1977 and commercially produced in 1981, this material is characterized by its ability to operate continuously at temperatures up to 250°C while maintaining excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Furthermore, it operates reliably in high-pressure water or steam environments up to 300°C. It also exhibits high mechanical strength and rigidity over a wide temperature range, as well as excellent creep resistance and abrasion resistance. Another key characteristic of PEEK is its natural flame retardancy, resulting in a very low risk of producing toxic gases.

Advantages of PEEK in Injection Molding

PEEK possesses high tensile strength, high stiffness, and impact resistance, maintaining structural integrity even under heavy loads and harsh conditions.

PEEK exhibits a low coefficient of friction and excellent abrasion resistance.

PEEK is inherently flame-retardant, producing extremely low levels of smoke and toxic gases when exposed to fire.

PEEK has a high melting point of approximately 343°C (649°F), maintaining its mechanical properties even at high temperatures.

PEEK exhibits strong resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including acids, alkalis, and organic solvents.

PEEK is biocompatible and can be used in medical applications such as implants and surgical instruments.

PEEK Grades and Variations for Injection Molding

To meet the needs of various industries, we offer a wide range of grades and types of PEEK resin, each designed to optimize performance for specific applications. Choosing the right grade is crucial to balancing mechanical properties, cost, and regulatory compliance. Below are the various grades of PEEK materials we offer.

This is the base grade of PEEK, offering excellent strength, toughness, and thermal stability. It boasts the highest ductility, making it ideal for many applications requiring precision machining, transparency, or balanced mechanical properties.

By adding 30% to 40% glass fiber, the stiffness, dimensional stability, and creep resistance of PEEK are significantly improved.

Compared to glass fiber reinforced materials, carbon fiber reinforced materials offer a higher strength-to-weight ratio, better abrasion resistance, and higher thermal conductivity.

Medical-grade PEEK material is specially formulated to meet the International Organization for Standardization/United States Pharmacopeia (ISO 10993, USP Class VI) biocompatibility standards. It exhibits excellent resistance to sterilization (steam, gamma ray, and ethylene oxide sterilization) while mimicking the mechanical properties of human bone.

By adding conductive additives, such as carbon black or special additives, PEEK can achieve controllable surface resistivity, making it suitable for manufacturing electronic components and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, as well as explosive workplaces where electrostatic dissipation is critical.

Bearing PEEK is filled with 20% PTFE and reinforced with graphite-reinforced carbon fibers to reduce the coefficient of friction, thereby improving wear resistance and frictional heat generation capacity.

Metal-detectable and X-ray-detectable PEEKs, as well as custom PEEKs, are available. These PEEK types are designed to meet specific customer needs for one or more application functionalities. For example, electrostatic dissipative PEEK is designed for environments requiring non-conductive materials to ensure safety and reliability.

PEEK 450G boasts a high tensile strength of 100 MPa, excellent chemical and solvent resistance, and good creep resistance.

PEEK 450GL30 features a high flexural modulus of 10.0 GPa. The addition of 30% glass fiber enhances its strength and stiffness, while also providing excellent dimensional stability.

PEEK 450CA30 exhibits a high heat deflection temperature of 280°C. This grade offers enhanced creep resistance, and the addition of 30% glass fiber further strengthens its mechanical properties, improving strength and stiffness.

PEEK 450FC30 utilizes a solid lubricant formulation to reduce the coefficient of friction. The combination of PTFE and carbon fiber reinforcement improves its wear resistance while retaining PEEK’s chemical resistance.

PEEK 450GUV’s formulation allows it to withstand ultraviolet (UV) radiation without significant performance degradation. It retains PEEK’s excellent thermal stability, making it suitable for high-temperature environments sensitive to UV radiation. Additionally, it possesses insulating properties.

PEEK 450GRC is reinforced with carbon fiber, offering exceptional strength and stiffness. The carbon fiber also enhances thermal conductivity, making it highly useful in applications requiring efficient heat dissipation. It maintains excellent dimensional stability even under varying temperature conditions.

Precision PEEK plastic parts manufacturing

Comparison of PEEK and PEI Injection Molding

In the field of injection molding, the core comparison between PEEK and PEI lies in their performance and cost. Both plastics possess similar properties such as high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. While their performance is similar, their costs differ significantly (typically, PEEK is 2-3 times more expensive than PEI). Although other plastics (such as PPS and LCP) may be comparable to PEEK and PEI in some aspects, they cannot replace PEEK and PEI in key indicators such as biocompatibility and long-term fatigue strength. Therefore, engineers must weigh performance and cost to select the optimal material.

FAQ

The typical tolerance for PEEK injection molding is ±0.05mm. Achieving precise tolerances depends on a variety of factors, including mold design, machine performance, and processing conditions. Proper mold maintenance and molding parameter control are crucial for consistently achieving the desired tolerances.

PEEK can be overmolded or used in multi-component injection molding, but this requires careful consideration of material and process conditions. Overmolding involves molding a PEEK part onto another material (such as metal or other plastics) to create a composite part with enhanced properties.

The recommended wall thickness for PEEK injection molded parts is typically 1.5mm to 5mm. While thinner wall thicknesses are possible, this requires careful mold design and precise process parameter control to ensure part quality and avoid defects such as warpage or incomplete filling.

We have professional mold designers and experienced technicians, and have introduced over 180 sets of advanced mold manufacturing equipment, with an annual mold production capacity of up to 1300 sets.

For products with low precision requirements, we can provide reverse engineering services based on the sample. However, if you can provide 2D or 3D drawings, it will help us understand your needs more accurately and provide you with a quote faster.

You need to provide 2D and 3D drawings so that we can provide a mold quote and start production faster. We support 2D drawing formats including AI, PDF, DWG, CAD, DXF, DLG, etc. We support 3D drawing formats including STP, STEP, etc.

Our factory strictly adheres to the precision requirements of the drawings you provide for installation and production. We will also communicate with you regarding the mold usage and precision requirements. If the mold does not meet your requirements and is due to a manufacturing problem on our part, our factory will be responsible for arranging rework. However, if the product is scrapped due to errors in your drawings, a separate solution will be required.

Depending on the application requirements, other alternatives can be considered, such as high-performance nylon, polyetherimide (PEI), and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS). However, these materials may not achieve the same superior performance as PEEK.

PEEK materials can maintain their mechanical properties at continuous temperatures up to 260°C. Compared to metals, they offer superior corrosion resistance and lighter weight while providing a similar strength-to-weight ratio.
