What is PEI (Polyetherimide)?
Polyetherimide is a translucent, high-strength polymer whose molecular structure consists of polyether and imide groups, giving it excellent properties. The imide groups enhance its heat resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical resistance, while the polyether groups impart toughness and impact resistance. The properties of polyetherimide provide design flexibility and freedom for various part geometries and applications.
PEI is available in multiple grades, which can be enhanced with different grades for chemical resistance, heat resistance, or elasticity. It also features high tensile strength, high stiffness, a good strength-to-weight ratio, and dimensional stability. Furthermore, it has natural flame retardancy and produces extremely low smoke when heated.
PEI Material Grades
Elimold offers a variety of grades of polyetherimide materials for plastic molding, depending on the material composition. Details of the ULTEM grades are as follows.
ULTEM1000
ULTEM 1000 is a general-purpose plastic material grade. It offers properties such as high mechanical strength, high young’s modulus, etc. This material is highly chemically resistant and also offers resistance to UV and Gamma radiations.
Ultem HU-1010
Ultem HU-1010 is a lower melt viscosity version of Ultem HU 1000. Its higher melt flow is preferable for injection molding intricate precision parts or those with very thin wall sections. The HU 1000 and HU 1010 grades have comparable properties and meet biocompatibility standards for devices that are in contact with bodily tissue and fluids for 24 hours or less.
Ultem HU 1004 PEI
Ultem HU 1004 PEI meets ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards and is suitable for applications involving contact with in vivo tissues and fluids for up to 29 days. It is made from a proprietary blend of PEI and another polymer, offering superior shock resistance compared to Ultem HU 1000 PEI. It also retains the high mechanical properties of the PEI polymer. Applications include dialysis units and postoperative drainage devices that require in-vivo placement for up to 4 weeks.
RPT 2100 LF
10% glass fiber-filled, low flow polyetherimide. Has good tensile and flexural strength, and high impact resistance. Good dimensional stability, with high chemical resistance and excellent flame retardant.
ULTEM2300
ULTEM 2300 grade is 30% glass-filled material. Along with the general features of ULTEM 1000, it additionally offers dimensional stability, rigidity, and tensile strength. It can be processed continuously to temperature up to 340° F, therefore it is the most commonly used grade of ULTEM.
ULTEM 2100
ULTEM2100 has 10% glass-filled composition. It falls under the ULTEM 2000 series, which offers a great strength-to-weight ratio.
ULTEM 2200
ULTEM2200 has 20% glass-filled composition. This offers ultimate dimensional stability and high chemical resistance. This material grade is often used for reusable chemical equipment manufacturing.
Sterilization Resistance
Medical-grade polyethyleneimine (PEI) materials are compatible with sterilization methods commonly used in medical institutions, exhibiting minimal performance degradation and color shift after repeated cycles. Ultem HU 1004 is particularly noteworthy, maintaining excellent ductility and minimal color shift even after 300 extreme cycles in STERRAD NX, 100NX, and AMSCO V-PRO systems.
ULTEM 2400
ULTEM 2400 has a 40% glass-filled composition, which makes it highly durable. This material is used for medical devices that need high sterilization. It is also available in FDA-compliant colors.
ULTEM 3452
ULTEM 3452 is a unique composition material grade. It features 45% glass fiber and mineral-filled composition. It offers enhanced flow ability and cracks resistance.
ULTEM 4000
ULTEM 4000 is PTFE and graphite filled material composition.

What's the difference between PEI and Ultem?
One of the most frequently asked questions about PEI and Ultem is, “What’s the difference between these two materials?” In fact, Ultem is a brand name for polyethyleneimine (PEI). Both PEI and Ultem are polyetherimides. However, PEI is a single material, while the Ultem brand includes several other advanced polyimide materials. You can choose either PEI or Ultem for your component design based on which polyimide material best matches your desired mechanical strength, thermal stability, or price range. When you want to turn your design from raw material into a component, you’ll want to choose the material best suited to your application.
Advanced PEI Plastic Injection Molding Expertise
Elimold employs several measures to determine and lock in molding conditions, ensuring optimal performance for every high-performance PEI plastic product we manufacture.
First, our technical team analyzes each grade of thermoplastic PEI to determine its melt flowability and melt stability. This characterization helps determine injection molding conditions and the PEI polymer melt heating history, preventing degradation of the material’s physical properties. Additionally, during injection molding, we utilize process control technology to maintain ideal production conditions for each PEI polymer and formulation. This control system, installed inside the mold, monitors and maintains the target melt temperature and pressure for Ultem and other high-performance polymers we manufacture.
