What is PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)?
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET, also known as PETP or PET-P in the European market) is an off-white or light yellow, highly crystalline polymer with a smooth, glossy surface. It is synthesized by the transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol or the esterification of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol, first forming bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, followed by a condensation reaction.
It possesses excellent creep resistance, fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. It has high wear resistance and hardness, making it one of the toughest thermoplastic materials. It has good electrical insulation properties and low-temperature resistance, but poor corona resistance. PET is non-toxic, weather-resistant, and chemically resistant, with good water absorption. However, it has low resistance to acids and organic solvents, and cannot be immersed in hot water or alkaline solutions. These are all the same material, different names for polyethylene terephthalate. PET is commonly used in North America, while PETP and PET-P are European naming conventions. They all refer to the same thermoplastic polyester with the same properties.
PET has excellent resistance to oils, greases, and many chemicals. However, prolonged contact with strong acids, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and hot water above 60°C should be avoided. We can provide suitability recommendations based on your specific application needs.
