What is Acrylic (PMMA)?
Acrylic, commonly known as PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), is a transparent polymer. This acrylic resin material has a refractive index of 1.49 and exhibits higher optical transparency than glass, with a light transmittance of 92%-95%. Acrylic is a brittle material with some tensile strength, but its overall toughness is not as good as some engineering plastics. Although it is harder than ordinary plastics, it is weaker than metals and relatively easy to scratch. It also has good weather resistance and chemical resistance, but it can be dissolved or corroded by certain organic solvents (such as acetone and chloroform). It does not degrade under ultraviolet light. PMMA material is widely used in the manufacture of durable, transparent, or colored parts in various industries, including aerospace, medical, signage, and electronics.
What is Acrylic (PMMA) CNC Machining?
Acrylic CNC machining is a process that utilizes computer numerical control (CNC) technology to cut, shape, and engrave acrylic materials. The manufacturing process of acrylic CNC parts typically involves a machinist using automated machine tools such as CNC engraving machines or CNC milling machines, controlled by pre-programmed computer software, to perform high-precision cutting based on a two-dimensional or three-dimensional digital design of the part or product. The acrylic material is fixed to the CNC machine’s worktable, and tools such as cutting blades, drills, and milling cutters are used to shape the material. This technology allows for the creation of complex designs and patterns that would be impossible to achieve manually. The integration of computer technology with machining processes has opened up new possibilities for precision engineering, fundamentally changing how custom projects are developed and executed.
Acrylic Grades We Work With
Elimold offers several different types of acrylic materials for you to choose from:
Clear Cast Acrylic
This option is more expensive and has lower impact strength, but offers superior optical clarity and lower internal stress. It’s the best choice for displays, decorative parts, or lenses.
Clear Extruded Acrylic
This is another transparent option, which is less expensive and typically has tighter thickness tolerances. Its optical clarity is not as good as transparent cast acrylic, but it’s still an excellent choice for protective screens or enclosures.
UV-Stable Acrylic
This acrylic offers better resistance to yellowing and degradation caused by UV radiation, and is often chosen by our customers for outdoor signage, automotive trim, or light covers.
Impact-Modified Acrylic
Impact-modified acrylic offers better impact resistance and higher toughness, but slightly lower optical clarity. However, it’s a better choice in industrial environments where impacts are expected.
Colored Acrylic
Finally, we offer a variety of opaque, translucent, and tinted acrylics to limit light transmission or match your brand image.

Surface Finishing Options for PMMA (Acrylic) CNC Parts
Our professional surface finishing services ensure your PMMA components achieve the desired aesthetics and functionality.
As Machined
PMMA can be left as machined, which results in a transparent or translucent finish depending on the machining process.
Sand Blasting
This finish can give PMMA a frosted or matte appearance, diffusing light and reducing transparency.
Tumbling
Tumbling can smooth the surface of PMMA, providing a polished, less glossy finish.
Painting
PMMA can be painted to achieve different colors and finishes, including matte, gloss, and textured surfaces.
Quality Management of Acrylic CNC Parts
From raw materials to production, we strictly adhere to quality control standards to provide our customers with high-quality acrylic parts that meet their expectations. We have established strong partnerships with branded material suppliers, ensuring that all materials meet the required specifications. Another crucial aspect is ensuring that the tools and equipment used in the production process are well-maintained to prevent any damage or discrepancies in the finished product. Once the parts are manufactured, we conduct a comprehensive inspection of all components. This includes checking each component for defects or damage and verifying dimensions against industry standards. Our experienced quality inspectors oversee every step from design to completion to ensure consistent quality.
FAQ
CNC acrylic engraving is a process of etching images or patterns onto the surface of acrylic. This can be achieved through various methods, including laser engraving, rotary engraving, and chemical etching. CNC acrylic engraving is known for its precision and versatility. We offer engraving services.
