What is POM?
POM, also commonly known as acetal, polyacetal, or by its trade names Delrin® (DuPont) and Celanese®, has become one of the most widely used engineering plastics in modern manufacturing. Polyoxymethylene homopolymer (POM) is an impact-resistant and abrasion-resistant semi-crystalline thermoplastic. It is also called acetal, polyoxymethylene (POM), polyacetal, polyoxymethylene, etc. Its molecular structure consists of repeating -CH₂O- groups, forming a highly crystalline polymer with excellent mechanical properties. It is unstable and easily degraded under acidic conditions and high temperatures. Due to the large amount of oxygen in its molecule, it is difficult to impart flame retardancy; its continuous operating temperature range is approximately -40℃ to 120℃. The density of POM is between 1.410 and 1.420 g/cm³. This engineering thermoplastic features high rigidity, low coefficient of friction, and dimensional stability. It has good chemical resistance and abrasion resistance, and its excellent rigidity ensures good application performance.
What's the difference between Delrin and POM?
Have you ever specified Delrin for a project but received a quote for POM instead? Or have you ever compared material specifications and found yourself confused about whether these materials were completely different or essentially the same?
Delrin and POM actually refer to the same basic material. POM (Polyoxymethylene) is a general name for a class of engineering thermoplastics, also often called acetal. Delrin, on the other hand, is the brand name for POM products from DuPont (now DowDuPont). Their main difference lies in the manufacturing method: Delrin is homopolymer POM, while general-purpose POM usually refers to copolymers, resulting in slightly different properties.
POM Plastics for Machining
POM-C Acetal Copolymer
POM-C acetal copolymer is an engineering plastic with extremely high strength, low coefficient of friction, chemical resistance, and excellent dimensional stability. Due to its high precision and ability to withstand harsh environments, it is commonly used in the automotive, food, and industrial sectors.
POM-H
Polyacetal homopolymer (POM-H) is an advanced engineering plastic widely used in industrial applications due to its outstanding durability, strength, hardness, abrasion resistance, and anti-slip properties. POM-H offers reliability and long lifespan, making it an ideal material for gears, bearings, and precision components.
POM-C FDA
POM-C FDA is a food-grade acetal copolymer that meets FDA standards, offering food safety and durability. It is particularly suitable for food processing, packaging, and manufacturing applications where high chemical resistance and food-grade reliability are required.
POM-C ESD
POM-C ESD is an acetal copolymer plastic (POM-C) modified with an antistatic agent, improving its durability and making it suitable for applications requiring conductivity and electrostatic discharge treatment.
DFM Analysis Capabilities and Services
Do you use plastic prototypes for validation during the development of new parts? If so, our engineering team can provide a one-stop service from drawing DFM analysis, prototype fabrication, POM CNC part surface treatment to part assembly. For major projects, we will have in-depth discussions with clients, providing constructive suggestions on structure, material selection, and surface treatment to help them solve problems and reduce processing costs.
We do not have a minimum order quantity (MOQ) standard. Whether it’s a single part, small batch production, or large-scale production, we can meet your needs. We have professional project engineers who follow up throughout the process, and each production batch is meticulously recorded and shared transparently with clients.
POM Machining Tolerance Capabilities
The machining tolerance of POM material is typically between ±0.05mm and ±0.005mm, depending on the complexity of the machining and specific requirements. Standard machining can achieve an accuracy of ±0.05mm, precision machining can achieve ±0.01mm, and high-precision machining can achieve an accuracy of ±0.005mm under strictly controlled conditions. If you are looking for a professional POM (Polyoxymethylene) CNC machining company, Elimold has been providing Delrin (Polyoxymethylene) machining services for many years, and is particularly skilled in milling, turning, and drilling POM.

FAQ
POM is a very practical material in CNC machining. Machinists familiar with plastics generally like it because of its good machinability. Compared to ABS, it has higher strength and dimensional stability. It is also a higher quality material, but more expensive.
How to solve them? These defects include wrinkling (uneven cooling), burrs (tool wear), and deformation (excessive fixture pressure). Solutions include optimizing cooling, regularly changing tools, controlling feed rate, and using flexible fixtures to hold thin-walled parts.
POM has better wear resistance than ABS, stronger dimensional stability (low water absorption) than PA66, and excellent chemical resistance, making it suitable for precision machinery, non-toxic medical components, and other applications that require long-term operation without lubrication.
Standard POM is not resistant to UV radiation and may degrade with prolonged exposure to sunlight. However, we have UV-stabilized POM grade products suitable for outdoor applications. Please consult us so we can determine the most suitable material for your project.
Yes, food-grade POM (FDA certified grade) is commonly used in conveyor components, bushings, and other equipment in the food processing industry. It features a low coefficient of friction and high resistance to moisture and chemical corrosion.
Yes, our engineers can review your designs and recommend material grades or adjustments to optimize performance and manufacturability.
For simple POM parts, lead times can range from a few days to several weeks. More complex POM parts requiring multiple machining operations or with complex geometries may have longer manufacturing times, with lead times potentially extending to several weeks or even longer.
In CNC machining, polyoxymethylene (POM), polyoxymethylene resin (Delrin), or polyoxymethylene (Octal) are commonly used materials due to their excellent mechanical properties, high rigidity, and low coefficient of friction. These characteristics make these materials suitable for precision parts requiring dimensional stability and wear resistance.
Nylon is a strong and durable plastic with a wide range of applications. It is lightweight yet tough enough to withstand wear. Nylon is waterproof and chemically resistant, allowing it to be frequently exposed to various harsh weather conditions. However, in terms of strength, Delrin is superior. Compared to nylon, Delrin has higher mechanical strength and stiffness while being lighter. It can also withstand higher temperatures than nylon and has better chemical resistance than most plastics. Delrin also has excellent fatigue resistance, meaning it can withstand repeated stress without cracking or breaking over time.
