What is PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide)?
Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a high-performance engineering plastic. It is a semi-crystalline, high-performance thermoplastic with an extremely stable molecular structure. PPS’s chemical resistance is generally comparable to PEEK and fluoropolymers. It is an excellent flame-retardant and non-combustible plastic. It has high strength and rigidity, but is relatively brittle and prone to stress brittle cracking. It is not resistant to organic solvents such as benzene and gasoline, but it has strong resistance to acids, alkalis, ketones, and hydrocarbons. Its long-term service temperature can reach 260℃, and it remains stable even in air or nitrogen environments at 400℃. Furthermore, PPS material is inert to vapors, strong alkalis, fuels, and acids. Combined with its low coefficient of thermal expansion and zero moisture absorption, it is an ideal material for continuous use in corrosive or harsh environments. All grades of PPS have a UL94 V-0 flame retardant rating, requiring no added flame retardants, making it an ideal material for the aerospace field where flame retardancy is crucial.
Key Characteristics of PPS Machinable Parts
Chemical Resistance
PPS exhibits strong resistance to a wide range of chemicals, acids, alkalis, and solvents, making it suitable for applications in chemically corrosive environments.
High Temperature Resistance
PPS possesses excellent thermal stability, maintaining its mechanical properties without significant performance degradation at temperatures exceeding 392°F.
Mechanical Strength
PPS offers good mechanical strength, stiffness, and impact resistance, making it suitable for load-bearing applications.
Dimensional Stability
PPS maintains its dimensions and shape under varying temperature and environmental conditions, ensuring stable performance.
Electrical Insulation
PPS is an effective electrical insulator, making it suitable for applications requiring both electrical and thermal stability.
Low Moisture Absorption
PPS has low moisture absorption, maintaining its mechanical properties and dimensional stability even in humid environments.
Flame Retardancy
Some PPS formulations possess inherent flame-retardant properties, making them suitable for applications with fire safety requirements.
Grades of PPS Material
Elimold Precision Machining Company frequently processes some PPS grades including Ryton®, Fortron®, TECHTRON®, TECTRON® HPV, TECATRON PVX, and TECATRON CMP.
Ryton® 40% Glass Reinforced PPS
Ryton®, Glass filled PPS, is the most recognized filled grade of PPS. Glass filled PPS has better dimensional stability and thermal performance than unfilled Techtron® PPS and maintains its strength to above 425°F. Ryton® is a trade name of Chevron Phillips Chemical.
Ryton® Bearing Grade PPS
Ryton®, Bearing grade PPS, is internally lubricated and is carbon fiber filled, offering a low coefficient of thermal expansion and uncompromised chemical resistance. Bearing grade Ryton® can be used for thrust or wear applications and when an electrical conductive material is required.
Techtron® PPS
Techtron® PPS is made by Quadrant EPP USA, Inc. Unfilled Techtron® is easily machined to close tolerances. Techtron® PPS can be used for structural applications in corrosive environments and as a lower-temperature replacement for PEEK. Standard Techtron® is off-white in color, but it is also available in black as a compression molded version.

Surface Treatment Solutions for PPS Machined Parts
We offer a variety of surface treatment solutions designed to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your CNC-machined PPS parts. Our surface treatment processes ensure that your parts meet all necessary specifications and performance standards.
As machined
PPS has a naturally smooth, clean finish right off the CNC machine, making it ready for use without additional finishing in many cases.
Polishing
High-precision polishing significantly improves surface smoothness, reduces friction, and enhances aesthetics.
Sand Blasting
Effective for creating a matte texture, sandblasting can give PPS a uniform appearance, especially when a non-glossy finish is desired.
Tumbling
Suitable for removing small burrs and smoothing edges, tumbling enhances the aesthetic without compromising PPS’s durability.
Teflon Coating
Teflon can be applied for low-friction or non-stick properties, which is beneficial in high-wear or sliding applications, with proper surface prep.
Painting
PPS can be painted for color customization or added surface protection, provided there’s careful surface preparation.
Deburring
Fine deburring eliminates sharp edges, machining burrs, and residual burrs, improving assembly accuracy, operator safety, and product quality.
Annealing
Controlled annealing eliminates internal stresses generated during processing, improving the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of PPS parts.
Surface Texture Finishing
Customized surface texture finishing services, including matte finishes and grip-enhancing patterns, improve operability, visibility, or prepare for subsequent coatings or adhesives.

FAQ
Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a semi-crystalline high-temperature engineering thermoplastic. It is one of the most important thermoplastics because its extremely stable molecular structure allows it to maintain excellent performance in environments with highly corrosive chemicals. It possesses many excellent properties, including heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, mildew resistance, bleach resistance, aging resistance, sunlight resistance, and abrasion resistance.
Processing PPS differs significantly from metalworking. PPS requires specialized tools and techniques to achieve precise processing results without damaging the material. Compared to injection molding, CNC machining of PPS offers greater flexibility, allowing for the production of complex geometries and small batches of parts without the need for expensive molds. Unlike 3D printing, CNC machining provides superior surface finish and dimensional accuracy for PPS components.
Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) has high strength and excellent chemical resistance. Currently, there are no known solvents that can dissolve PPS at temperatures below 400ºF (approximately 204°C). Due to its low hygroscopicity and excellent thermal stability, PPS has long been used to manufacture high-precision parts for harsh environments.
Among commonly used plastics, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) has the best structural stability and strong resistance to physical or chemical degradation.
Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a partially crystalline, high-temperature, high-performance polymer with a melting point as high as approximately 280°C. It exhibits excellent chemical resistance and is inherently flame-retardant.
Yes, PPS performs exceptionally well under UV light and weather conditions, making it ideal for a variety of outdoor applications.
Compared to some other plastics, PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) is more difficult to process, requiring specialized tools and techniques. Additionally, PPS is relatively brittle and may crack under high stress or impact conditions. Furthermore, PPS typically only offers a few colors, which can be a problem for manufacturers who need to provide specific color options for their products.
