What is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)?

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a synthetic plastic polymer composed of interconnected vinyl chloride monomers. It is typically produced using suspension polymerization or emulsion polymerization processes and is generally classified into two types: rigid PVC and flexible PVC. It can be made into transparent sheets, rigid blocks, and flexible sheets.

Generally, industrially produced PVC has a molecular weight between 50,000 and 110,000, exhibiting a wide molecular weight distribution. The molecular weight increases as the polymerization temperature decreases. It has no fixed melting point; it begins to soften at 80-85℃, becomes viscoelastic at 130℃, and transitions to a viscous flow state at 160-180℃. It possesses good mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of approximately 60 MPa and an impact strength of 5-10 kJ/m². This material exhibits strong resistance to UV radiation, corrosion, and chemicals, low moisture absorption, and excellent electrical insulation properties. Compared to other plastics, PVC is considered an environmentally friendly material because it uses relatively low amounts of non-renewable raw materials in its production process.

What are CNC-machined PVC Parts?

CNC machining of PVC parts refers to the precision machining of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material using CNC machining equipment to manufacture parts of various shapes and specifications. CNC machining is a machining method that uses computers and CNC equipment to convert graphics and instructions into electrical signals, controlling the machining equipment to perform automated processing. CNC machining processes for PVC parts typically include turning, milling, drilling, and other techniques, capable of meeting the machining needs of parts with different shapes and specifications. CNC machining equipment can achieve high-precision machining and meet customer requirements for dimensions, shape, surface roughness, etc. CNC machining of PVC is similar to that of other engineering plastics, and due to its rigidity and hardness, it is relatively easy to machine.

Our Use of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Types and Grades

Below are the types and grades of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used by Elimold for its PVC CNC machining services.

Flexible PVC (Plasticized PVC)

This is a flexible PVC made by adding a small amount of compatible plasticizer. This type of PVC has a lower molecular density, approximately 1.1-1.35 g/cm³. It also has lower crystallinity.

Rigid PVC (Unplasticized PVC)

This is a high molecular weight PVC with a molecular weight of 1.3-1.34 g/cm³. It has high impact resistance, high strength, water resistance, and chemical resistance. PVC parts machined using this type of PVC exhibit high dimensional stability.

Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride

This is a special-purpose PVC. It is made by chlorinating rigid PVC. Parts machined using this grade of PVC by CNC machining exhibit high durability, flame retardancy, and chemical resistance.

PVC-O

This is another special type of PVC, made by reorganizing the amorphous structure of rigid PVC into layered PVC. This type of PVC has advantages such as high stiffness and high fatigue resistance.

PVC-M

This special-purpose PVC is modified using several chemical reagents. By adding modifiers to rigid PVC, its stiffness, toughness, impact resistance, and other properties can be enhanced.

PVC CNC Machining Tolerances and Manufacturing Capabilities

Our advanced three-axis and five-axis CNC machining centers can machine complex PVC geometries, including undercuts, internal features, curved surfaces, and fine details. The excellent machinability of PVC enables complex part designs while maintaining dimensional accuracy. For most PVC parts, we achieve standard tolerances of ±0.005 inches (±0.125 mm). For critical dimensions, with appropriate fixtures and environmental control, we can maintain precision tolerances of ±0.002 inches (±0.05 mm). In specific applications, geometric tolerances can be as low as ±0.001 inches. We can machine PVC parts with dimensions up to 1200mm × 800mm × 150mm (47″ × 31″ × 6″). For larger parts, we can provide assembly services or segmented machining. We can also machine precision miniature parts with feature dimensions as small as 0.5mm.

PVC Surface Finish Solutions

Elimold offers a variety of PVC surface finish solutions to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of components. Our extensive range of surface finish technologies ensures your machined PVC parts meet the needs of your specific applications.

As machined

PVC parts often come out of machining with a smooth, clean finish that’s good to go without extra work.

Sand Blasting

Light sandblasting gives PVC a beautiful matte finish, ideal for uniform, non-reflective surfaces. Just handle gently and avoid abrasion.

Teflon Coating

Adding a Teflon layer gives PVC low-friction, non-stick properties, which is great for parts that slide or handle wear.

Painting

PVC takes well to paint with the right prep, making it easy to add color or a protective layer where needed.

Powder Coating

Though not as common, powder coating can add a durable, attractive finish if the PVC surface is carefully prepared.
