What is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)?
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or “vinyl chloride,” is an amorphous thermoplastic material. It is a white, brittle solid, available in both powder and granular forms. It possesses excellent chemical resistance and dielectric properties, good ductility, high flexural strength, high mechanical strength, low moisture absorption, good dimensional stability, and good flame retardancy. The maximum operating temperature of PVC is 140°F. By adding plasticizers, impact modifiers, and other components, the physical properties of PVC can be easily modified, thereby cultivating and enhancing its specific characteristics. Furthermore, it has good electrical insulation properties, is self-extinguishing after ignition, and has a relatively low manufacturing cost.
PVC Injection Molding Manufacturing
The PVC injection molding process is not significantly different from that of a typical injection molding project. PVC plastic initially exists in granular or powder form. The granules are then melted into a moldable state. The optimal molding temperature for PVC is typically 345°F to 375°F (177°C to 190°C). Processing PVC at the correct melt temperature is crucial to avoid serious decomposition problems. Once the material reaches its melt temperature, it is injected into the cavity of a mold. The PVC solidifies almost immediately after the mold is filled. After the material has completely cooled, the sides of the PVC mold open, ejecting the part. The part falls into a collection box, and the entire process begins again. Rigid Polyvinyl Chloride (UPVC or Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride)
It possesses high mechanical strength, weather resistance, and fire resistance. Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) is hard and rigid, with an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 52 MPa at 20°C, and is resistant to most chemicals. PVC-U can generally be used at temperatures up to 60°C, but the actual temperature limit depends on stress and environmental conditions.
Flexible PVC (Soft PVC)
Flexible PVC (plasticized PVC) has a plasticizer content of 30-70%. It is flexible and elastic, and can be molded into complex shapes. The formulation of plasticized PVC varies more than that of PVC-U.
Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC)
Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) is based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and further chlorinated, increasing the chlorine content to 65-72%. It has better heat resistance, aging resistance, corrosion resistance, and chemical stability. Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (PVC-C) is similar to polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) in most properties, but it has higher temperature resistance, with a maximum operating temperature of 95°C.
PVC-M (Modified PVC)
Impact-modified PVC has added modifiers such as acrylates and rubber to improve impact resistance. Compared to rigid PVC, it has lower tensile strength and yield strength.
PVC-O (Biaxially Oriented Polyvinyl Chloride)
Oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVC-O) is PVC that has been stretched to align its molecular chains, thus enhancing its strength and compressive strength. PVC has a wide range of applications, which can be improved by adjusting the formulation and additives.
