What is Spring Steel?
Spring steel is a medium-to-high carbon alloy, typically containing between 0.5% and 1.0% carbon. It also contains other alloying additives such as manganese, nickel, chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum. However, the primary component of spring steel is silicon. Silicon is highly valued for its durability, shape retention, and flexibility, making it ideal for spring steel and imparting high yield strength to the material. This flexibility allows the material to deform and return to its original state after unloading. Therefore, products made from spring steel can withstand continuous bending, compression, tension, or torsion without permanent deformation.
What's the Difference Between Steel and Spring Steel?
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, containing other elements as well. There are different types of steel, each with unique properties. Their alloy compositions and processing methods even differ. Spring steel is also a type of steel, but it is chosen for its high hardness, good elasticity, and high yield strength.
According to the steel classification standard GB/T 13304, spring steel is classified as mechanical structural steel due to its basic properties and usage characteristics. In terms of quality grade, it belongs to special steel, requiring strict control over its quality and performance during production. Furthermore, based on chemical composition, spring steel can be further divided into carbon spring steel, alloy spring steel, stainless steel spring steel, copper-based spring alloys, and nickel-based spring alloys.
Spring Steel Material Grades
Spring steel comes in various types, each with its unique composition, properties, and applications. Below are the spring steel material types offered by Elimold:
1074/1075
1074 and 1075 are high-carbon spring steels with excellent wear resistance and moderate hardness. These spring steels combine flexibility and strength, making them suitable for manufacturing blades, flat springs, and scrapers. Due to their high carbon content, they are suitable for environments requiring high adaptability.
1095 (A684)
1095, also known as A684, contains 0.95% carbon and has excellent strength and edge retention. Therefore, it is used in applications requiring durability and sharp edges, such as cutting tools and knives. Due to its high carbon content, it has poor ductility and is relatively brittle.
5160 (A689)
5160 spring steel, also known as A689, is a chromium-containing low-alloy steel. The presence of chromium gives it toughness and fatigue resistance. It is used in automotive leaf springs, swords, and some heavy tools. The presence of chromium gives it wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties.
9255
9255 is a steel alloy composed of silicon and manganese to enhance its flexibility and strength. It is suitable for coil springs and torsion bars. It is suitable for high-stress applications and can withstand high impact forces.
301 (A666) Spring Steel
A666 or 301 is a spring steel with high tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It is suitable for environments requiring corrosion resistance and flexibility. Furthermore, it has good structural integrity, therefore it is used in automotive trim, medical devices, and aerospace components.

FAQ
Spring steel comes in several grades, commonly including 17-7 PH stainless steel, 302 stainless steel, or high-carbon steel, depending on the required spring properties.
While spring steel can be machined, its higher hardness generally makes it more difficult than low-carbon steel. Machining spring steel typically requires hard, sharp tools and lower cutting speeds to prevent overheating and damage to the tool and/or workpiece. Furthermore, spring steel workpieces tend to harden during machining, further increasing the difficulty.
To improve the machinability of spring steel, it can be annealed or pre-hardened before machining. Annealing involves heating the spring steel to a specific temperature and then slowly cooling it to soften the material. This is beneficial for machining but may reduce the material's elasticity and strength. Pre-hardened spring steel, on the other hand, has been heat-treated to achieve a specific hardness, making it easier to machine while retaining some of its excellent properties.
The Rockwell hardness (HRC) of spring steel typically ranges from 44 to 57, with the specific value depending on the steel grade and heat treatment process. For example, AISI 1095 spring steel, after quenching and tempering, typically has a Rockwell hardness of approximately 55-57; while AISI 5160 spring steel, after heat treatment, typically has a Rockwell hardness of approximately 52-56.
AISI 1095 is one of the strongest, most durable, and most widely used spring steels. With a carbon content of approximately 0.95%, it possesses excellent strength and toughness. It is often used to manufacture high-stress springs and components requiring extremely high strength and durability.
Another high-strength spring steel is AISI 6150, also known as chromium-vanadium steel. This alloy steel contains chromium, vanadium, and carbon, giving it high strength, high toughness, and fatigue resistance. AISI 6150 is commonly used to manufacture springs and components requiring high strength, such as truck springs and other heavy-duty applications.
Other high-strength spring steel grades include AISI 5160 (containing manganese, silicon, and carbon) and AISI 4340 (nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, known for its exceptional strength and toughness).
