What is zinc?

Zinc (represented by Zn in the periodic table) is a relatively common nonmagnetic metal. It is often alloyed with aluminum, magnesium, and copper. These zinc alloys are called Zamak (a term derived from the initials of the German names of the four elements: zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper). Zinc possesses excellent damping properties, high ductility, and long-term dimensional stability. CNC-machined zinc alloy parts can maintain high precision and require less machining to achieve the desired tolerances.
Zinc alloys are among the most economical materials available. Despite their low price, zinc alloys offer good mechanical strength, are easy to machine, and can withstand mechanical shocks well. Complex parts are often die-cast first, followed by machining of key features, thus reducing overall CNC machining time and cost.

Using Zinc for CNC Machining

Zinc alloys are materials based on zinc and mixed with other elements such as aluminum, copper, and magnesium. Depending on the different alloying elements and proportions, zinc alloys can be classified into various types, each with its specific physical and mechanical properties. Below are some zinc alloy materials we offer.

Zamak 3, sometimes referred to as Zinc Alloy 3, is the most common zinc alloy in North America due to its excellent balance of hardness, ductility, and strength. It’s an ideal choice for numerous CNC machining applications.

  • Tensile Strength: 285 MPa, 41,300 psi
  • Yield Strength: 250 MPa, 36,300 psi
  • Shear Modulus: 40 GPa
  • Elongation at Break: 10%
  • Hardness (Brinell): 82
  • Density: 6.6 g/cm³, 0.238 lb/in³
  • Maximum Temp: 380 – 395°C, 716 – 743°F

Zamak 5, also known as Zinc Alloy 5, is well-known for its higher copper content which enhances strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance compared to Zamak 3. It is an excellent choice for CNC machining parts that require extra strength.

  • Tensile Strength: 330 MPa, 48,000 psi
  • Yield Strength: 295 MPa, 43,000 psi
  • Shear Modulus: 41.5 GPa
  • Elongation at Break: 7%
  • Hardness (Brinell): 91
  • Density: 6.7 g/cm³, 0.242 lb/in³
  • Maximum Temp: 380 – 390°C, 716 – 734°F

ZA-8, also known as Zinc Aluminum Alloy 8, is characterized by its higher aluminum content compared to other zinc alloys. Its improved strength, hardness, and ability to be cast with thin walls make it an excellent choice for intricate, high-precision CNC parts.

  • Tensile Strength: 386 MPa, 56,000 psi
  • Yield Strength: 361 MPa, 52,300 psi
  • Shear Modulus: 43 GPa
  • Elongation at Break: 10%
  • Hardness (Brinell): 106
  • Density: 6.1 g/cm³, 0.22 lb/in³
  • Maximum Temp: 370 – 380°C, 698 – 716°F

Zinc cnc machining service

Still struggling to find durable, high-quality zinc CNC parts that can be delivered on time?

Finding a reliable zinc machining partner can be incredibly difficult when facing tight deadlines and demanding specifications. Burrs, excessive tolerances, and low productivity can all disrupt your operations and drive up costs. At Elimold, we solve these challenges with cutting-edge machining technology and a commitment to delivering parts that exceed expectations.

Comparison with Other Machining Metals

Besides zinc alloys, other metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium are also widely used in CNC machining. Aluminum is relatively soft and can be machined at faster speeds. Aluminum alloy grades such as 6061, 6082, and 7050 are commonly used materials for machined parts. Aluminum is frequently used in parts manufacturing due to its lightweight, high corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical strength.
On the other hand, machining titanium and stainless steel is more challenging than machining zinc and aluminum alloys. Titanium, in particular, has high hardness, requiring the use of special cutting tools (such as diamond-coated tips) to avoid cracking and rapid tool wear.
