Splines in spline shafts are typically used in rotary drive mechanisms and any machine that transmits rotary motion from an input shaft to an output shaft. One or more spline structures are usually used. A spline shaft is a shaft with regularly spaced teeth arranged around its perimeter in the direction of rotational motion. These teeth can be straight or sharp. The difference between external and internal spline shafts is that there is a gap between the teeth of an internal spline shaft. The rotational motion of a spline shaft is transmitted to internal spline components, such as gears or other rotating mechanisms. Spline drives can distribute the load evenly across the sides of the teeth. This weight distribution method results in a longer service life than keyway drives.

Every spline shaft is inspected using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), laser measurement, and functional measurement to ensure tolerances are strictly controlled within ±0.002 mm. All processes comply with ISO standards and have complete material traceability. Furthermore, for complex or hard-to-reach splines and harder materials, a full suite of gauge measurements is especially important. For small-batch production or reverse-engineered parts, gauge measurement may be impractical. We can use your supplied mating parts as a standard, or develop male and female assemblies as needed, ensuring the durability of every precision spline shaft.

Carburizing, induction hardening, quenching and tempering, and nitriding are all commonly used processes, but they produce different requirements for the depth of the nitrided layer, core strength, deformation, and surface finish. The drawings must clearly specify the desired machining results.
Elimold offers precision spline grinding services for machined hardened shafts to correct heat treatment deformation and achieve tight tolerances (IT6-IT7). Our CNC spline grinding equipment can machine involute and straight-edge profiles, achieving excellent surface finishes.
