What is Powder Metallurgy?
Powder metallurgy manufacturing, also known as powder metallurgy, is a process that uses metal powders to manufacture solid metal parts. It first requires understanding the basic properties of metal powders and the sintering process. Unlike CNC machining, which removes material from a solid blank, powder metallurgy manufacturing processes can shape parts to near their final form. This is called near-net-shape manufacturing. The powder metallurgy process first mixes metals, alloys, binders, and other additives to create a mixture used to manufacture the parts. Because the raw materials are in powder form, the proportions can be adjusted to give the finished product very specific properties, such as lubricity, porosity, or corrosion resistance, and to achieve net or near-net-shape forming.
Powder Metal Manufacturing Process: How It Works
The first step in the process is to create a mold that perfectly matches the shape and size of the part. This is typically done using CAD files and CNC machining equipment. The powder mixture is placed into the mold and compacted to give the part sufficient strength to remain solid after demolding and transfer to a sintering furnace. These “green blanks” are conveyed into the sintering furnace and heated to slightly below their melting point in a controlled environment. This allows a strong, permanent bond to form between the individual particles. Depending on your needs, the sintered parts may require additional heat treatment to improve hardness and wear resistance, or they may be ready to use directly after sintering.
Powder Metallurgy Manufacturing Applications
Elimold provides sintered metal parts for industries such as automotive, motorcycle, home appliances, textile machinery, power tools, garden tools, and locks. Our products cover structural components, gears, oil-impregnated bushings and bearings, as well as other precision powder metallurgy components. You can choose from our standard powder metallurgy parts without developing new molds or incurring mold costs. This helps shorten project cycles and supports faster sample testing or small-batch validation. For special applications, Elimold can also custom-produce sintered metal parts based on your drawings, samples, or technical requirements. Our team provides support in material selection, mold design, pressing, sintering, secondary processing, and quality control to ensure production stability.
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) vs. Powder Metallurgy (PM)
Metal injection molding (MIM) is renowned for its superior precision and complexity in machining metals and alloys, making it the preferred method for manufacturing small to medium-sized, complex-designed metal parts. Its advantage lies in its ability to produce parts with complex geometries, including fine details, undercuts, and thin-walled structures. MIM tolerances are typically ±0.005 inches (±0.127 mm) or lower, making it ideal for high-precision applications. However, while MIM’s cost-effectiveness is particularly pronounced in high-volume production due to economies of scale, its initial mold and material costs can be relatively high. Thanks to the inherent precision of the process, MIM parts typically require minimal post-processing.
